How Tanga Odoi Survived NRM Power Struggles as Museveni Keeps Him at the Helm of EC

President Yoweri Museveni has once again shown his power within the National Resistance Movement (NRM) by keeping Dr. Tanga Odoi as the head of the party’s Electoral Commission.

This decision was made during a meeting of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) at State House in Entebbe, leaving many surprised, especially those who had hoped for his removal.

For months, several NRM party members, including senior officials, have accused Odoi of mismanaging party elections.

They argue that his actions weaken the democratic process within the party.

Many of them expected Museveni to replace Odoi before the party primaries scheduled for July, ahead of the 2026 general elections. However, Museveni’s decision to keep Odoi in charge has dashed their hopes.

Despite the criticism, Museveni has decided that Odoi will continue overseeing the party’s elections.

The president's move shows that he still trusts Odoi to manage the internal election process and believes he is the right person to handle the upcoming elections.

While Odoi remains the chairman of the Electoral Commission, CEC made some changes in the commission's leadership.

Former Finance Minister Fred Jachan Omach was appointed as the vice-chairperson, replacing John Alimpa Kigyaagi.

Jane Babiha Alisemera has retained her position as commissioner. Several new members were also added to the team, including Juliana Auma, James Tweheyo, Zaitun Driwaru, and Ambassador James Kinobe.

Museveni's decision seems to be aimed at maintaining stability within the party.

With the elections drawing closer, he wants to ensure that the NRM is well-organized and united.

Those who opposed Odoi’s leadership now have to accept that he will continue managing the party’s elections. This decision also signals that loyalty to the president and delivering results matter more than internal conflicts.

The CEC also set a deadline for electing party leaders by the end of April.

The final register of party members is expected to be ready by April 2.

NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong announced that the party's membership has grown to 20.7 million, up from 18.3 million the previous year.

However, some members remain concerned about the credibility of the upcoming elections, especially with past complaints about voter registration and possible manipulation.

Despite these concerns, Museveni’s decision to keep Odoi shows that he values stability and loyalty within the party.
